Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Portrait photography serves as a powerful medium for preserving and celebrating cultural identity. In Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, traditional and contemporary portrait photography has played a significant role in capturing the essence of local customs, attire, and social structures. Portraits not only document personal and communal histories but also serve as tools for cultural education and heritage preservation. According to Usman and Bello (2023), portrait photography in Borgu reflects the region's rich cultural tapestry, showcasing traditional attire, hairstyles, and ceremonial practices. Despite its cultural significance, the impact of portrait photography on cultural identity in Borgu remains underexplored, with limited documentation of its role in fostering cultural pride and intergenerational knowledge transfer. This study aims to investigate the contribution of portrait photography to cultural identity in Borgu.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The cultural heritage of Borgu is under threat from globalization and modernization, which often prioritize external influences over local traditions. Portrait photography, as a medium for cultural preservation, is not fully utilized to counter this trend. Many photographers in Borgu focus on commercial projects, neglecting opportunities to document and promote cultural identity. Existing research often overlooks the intersection of photography and cultural identity, creating a gap in understanding how portrait photography can serve as a tool for cultural preservation and education (Abdullahi & Tunde, 2024). This study addresses this gap by exploring the role of portrait photography in Borgu.
